4. Other Properties

The City of Oaks Foundation frequently partners with the City of Raleigh and other community partners, when the conservation and recreation values of the land can be enhanced by public ownership. Conservation properties have been, with the donor’s approval, been donated as public parks or dedicated as public open space.

Maybrook Forest

Once destined to be the second phase of a residential development project, a conservation-minded real estate developer instead donated this patch of hardwood forest high ground to the City of Oaks Foundation, and the Foundation is working with Raleigh to create a needed neighborhood park largely left in its natural state. Maybrook Forest represents a classic win-win-win resolution: the developer realized significant tax savings, the Foundation (and the City) received a valuable land donation, and the surrounding neighborhoods can look forward to a new park.

Neuse River Bottomland Forest

Wetlands and floodplains perform vital services for us if we permit them. Purifying water, soaking up floods, moderating droughts, and providing homes to a bevy of plants and animals are all provided by this donation of land by a multinational corporation. The Foundation was able to convey vital wetlands to the City of Raleigh to help protect the Neuse River watershed and our drinking water.
